Steps to tackle Covid- 19 at Delhi High Court

In view of the fight the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (COVID – 19) in India, the Government on March 24, 2020 announced a 21 days complete lockdown.

Delhi HC, including all Subordinate Courts, Suspends its Functioning till April 15

In view of the further spread of novel coronavirus, COVID-19, functioning of the Delhi High Court and its subordinate courts has been suspended till April 15 vide an order dated March 24, 2020. It has further adjourned the matters pending before the court of Registrars and Joint Registrars on the date April 13, April 14 and April 15, 2020 to July 13, July 14 and July 15, 2020 respectively[1].

It was also directed the respective District and Sessions Judges to also permit judges and other staff officials to work from home or wherever possible.

Delhi HC, including all Subordinate Courts, extends all Interim Orders till May 15

In light of the national lockdown and limited functioning of the Courts, a three-Judge Bench comprising of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justices Siddharth Mridul, Talwant Singh of the High Court of Delhi passed an order dated March 25, 2020[2] stating all interim orders passed by the Delhi High Court and its subordinate courts, which were subsisting as on March 16 and are likely to expire or have already expired, will automatically extend till May 15, 2020, or until further orders, except where any orders to the contrary have been passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in any particular matter, during the intervening period. It is also said that appropriate relief shall be given if the extension causes any hardship of any extreme nature. The Bench also ordered that the routine matters are adjourned en bloc to the month of April.

The High Court of Delhi took Suo Moto cognizance of the said matter, under Article 226 & 227 of the Constitution of India. Keeping in view that lawyers/advocates concerned and litigants were not in the position to appear in these matters, including those where stay/bails/paroles were granted by the High Court or the courts subordinate to it, on or before March 03, 2020. In the result of it, interim orders operating in favour of parties either expired or would expire on or after March 16, 2020.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO) Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered corona virus. The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Apart from this, one of the major solution to avoid the pandemic is social distancing.
