EPFO Allows Withdrawal Without Aadhaar!

March 2, 2017

Introduction

Ministry of Labour and Employment vide notification number S.O 26(E) dated 4 January, 2017[1] had made it mandatory for members and pensioners desirous of continuing to avail pension and membership to Employees’ Pension Scheme to furnish proof of possession of the Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar authentication as per procedure of EPFO for hassle free identification. In furtherance of the notification, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) issued a circular dated 6 January, 2017 so that the notification could be widely publicised.

As the mandatory submission of Aadhaar No. appears to have caused some issues in regards to settlement of withdrawal claims, the EPFO vide its circular dated February 28, 2017[2] has now notified that:-

  • Obtaining of Aadhaar should be mandatory for pension (10 D Claims); while
  • Obtaining of Aadhaar is no longer mandatory for withdrawal cases (10 C Claims).
