Which inventions can be protected as patents in EPO/Europe?

Article 52 of European Patent Convention (EPC) states that “European patents shall be granted for any inventions, in all fields of technology, provided that they are new, involve an inventive step and are susceptible of industrial application”

An invention can be a product, a process or an apparatus. To be patentable, it must be new, industrially applicable and involve an inventive step in accordance with the following Articles of EPC:
