In a significant development aimed at strengthening workplace safety within India’s legal fraternity, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has issued a extensive set of guidelines calling for mandatory adoption of POSH Act compliant mechanisms across bar associations, law offices, State Bar Councils and the BCI itself.
A recent case highlights that repeatedly calling a female employee derogatory nicknames—such as “potato”—can amount to workplace harassment. Even words framed as “jokes” may create a hostile or offensive work environment when they target an individual’s dignity or are repeated despite objection.
The takeaway for organizations is clear: respect, professionalism, and sensitivity in language are essential, and inappropriate comments—however casual—can carry serious consequences under workplace conduct and harassment policies.
The Himachal Pradesh Police has directed a comprehensive statewide audit to assess compliance with the POSH Act across all police units and establishments.
The audit, to be completed within 15 days, will examine whether Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) have been properly constituted, are functioning effectively, and are adhering to mandatory procedures under the Act.
