Introduction
“MAKE IN INDIA” is an initiative which was launched on September 25, 2014 with an aim to facilitate investment, foster innovation, build best in class infrastructure, and most importantly make India a hub for manufacturing, design and innovation. Being one of the first ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives that exposed India’s manufacturing domain to the world, Make in India has been a great success in terms of achieving the goals set forth under the scheme.
With Make in India 2.0 already in implementation, the aim is to create a conducive environment for investment, modern and efficient infrastructure, opening up new sectors for foreign investment and forging partnership between government and industry through positive mindset.
The Make in India Logo (hereinafter referred to as the “Logo”) is the shadow of a lion on a prowl, made completely of cogs, to symbolize manufacturing strength and national pride. The pictorial representation of the Logo is pasted below:
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (hereinafter referred to as “DIPP”), Government of India has launched an extensive international and domestic media campaigns under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The and other related proprietary material available with DIPP have been made available for use subject to terms and conditions specified therein. DIPP has laid extensive guidelines for use of the Logo by permitted users of the logo considering the proprietary value of the Logo.
Guidelines for permitting the use of “Make in India” logo
[1]The Logo and other related proprietary material are valuable assets to DIPP, hence, DIPP requires the user of the Logo, in part of in whole, to acknowledges that DIPP is the sole owner of the trademark and promises to not interfere with DIPP’s rights and will not harm, misuse, or bring into disrepute the “Make in India” Logo.
Accordingly, the policies have been framed and approved by various Government/ Semi Government/ Private Authorities regarding the use of the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo.
1. Who can use “MAKE IN INDIA” logo without any permission?
The following categories will be allowed to use the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo without any permission:
- All establishments, offices and officers of the DIPP, Government of India
- All Central Government Ministries/Departments and Departments of State Governments/UT Administrations for use of the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo in programs directly organized by them.
- To the Indian embassies/ mission abroad for using the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo for events, brochures, publicity material and advertisements that Promote the “Make in India” initiative and are sponsored by the Embassies/Mission.
2. Who can use “MAKE IN INDIA” logo with prior approval of the DIPP, Government of India?
- All Central Government Ministries / Departments / PSUs and Departments of State Governments/UT Administrations for using the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo in programs conducted in association with industry bodies like CII / FICCI / ASSOCHAM / PHDCCI.
- All events which are financially supported by the DIPP, Government of India.
- Events which are organized by a private body for a specified period that promote the “Make in India” initiative.
3. Use of the logo “MAKE IN INDIA” for Events, Publications, Websites / Portals.
- The permission to use the Logo for events which are financially supported by the DIPP, Government of India and events which are organized by a private body for a specified period that promote the Make in India initiative shall be considered on merits of the case with particular emphasis on:
- Nature and importance of the event
- Profile / track record of the organizers
- Profile of participants and delegates
- Other deliverables offered by way of exhibition space at the venue, distribution of DIPP’s publicity material in the delegate kits, etc.
- The request for use of the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo on publications, websites / portals will be considered only if those publications, websites / portals belongs to be approved sectors of “MAKE IN INDIA”. Such request will be considered on merit of each case.
- The request for use of the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo by an individual will be considered if the use of the logo promotes the “MAKE IN INDIA” cause. Such request will be considered on merit of each case.
4. Use of the Logo for programs on Electronic Media
The requested received with respect to the use of the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo for programs on electronic media the emphasis will be given to the following points:
- nature of the program
- profile / track record of the producers of the program
- target audience
- contents of the program and inclusion of manufacturing related content in the program
- extent to which the program would help in increasing awareness about approved sectors under “Make in India” as well as the culture and heritage of the country.
5. Procedure to acquire the permission to use the “MAKE IN INDIA” logo.
- The requests for use of the Logo are decided on the basis of these guidelines on merit and are subject to approval by JS (BE-III).
- DIPPP may seek additional detail in respect of requests for use of the Logo for Events, Publications, Websites/Portals, electronic programmes, etc., before taking any decision on request.
- The request for use of logo for programmes on electronic media must be received in the DIPP at least 30 days in advance along with complete details.
6. Use of the “Make in India” logo for any other purpose would be considered on the basis of merit of each case, keeping in view the visibility, impact and the extent about manufacturing or its related aspects and approval of JS (BE-III) shall be obtained.
7. Permission granted by the DIPP, Government of India, for use of the Logo shall be subject to:
- The right of the DIPP to withdraw permission for use of the Logo by giving sufficient notice;
- The right of the DIPP to view the proposed design and layout of the Logo usage, prior to finalization of the same;

The applications for use of the Logo are to be made in the specified format as provided under the Guidelines. The format of the same is pasted below:
