Bail granted to ex-Wrestling Federation Chief

Introduction

The Former Chief of the Wrestling Federation of India WFI, Mr. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh along with his assistant secretary, Mr. Vinod Tomar were accused of committing act of sexual harassment on six female wrestlers. They were charged with the offences under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, which includes Section 354 (pertaining to assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), Section 354 A (related to sexual harassment), Section 354 D (concerning stalking) and Section 506 (relating to criminal intimidation).

On July 18, 2023, interim bail was granted to the accused by the Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court until the bail application was decided.1

On July 20, 2023 the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), Harjeet Singh Jaspal of the Rouse Avenue Courts, heard the matter and granted bail to the former Chief and assistant secretary on a personal bond of INR 25000 each in the alleged sexual harassment and molestation cases filed by the female wrestlers, subject to imposition of two conditions namely:-

Firstly, they are restricted from leaving the country without seeking prior permission of the court and secondly, they are directed not to influence any witnesses or tamper with the evidence.

The matter has been listed by the court for further hearing on July 28, 2023.
