Introduction
Wrestlers’ sexual harassment case has stirred the media again as the former Chief of the Wrestling Federation of India, Mr. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of allegedly sexually harassing six female wrestlers, has been granted interim bail till Thursday, i.e. July 20, 2023, by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court. The Court has also granted bail to the co-accused Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India. The charges include against Brij Bhushan includes Sections 354(outraging modesty of a woman), Sec 364A (sexually colored remarks) Sec 354D (stalking) also has been charged with criminal intimidation under section 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
Background
In pursuance of the wrestlers’ protest and filing of a plea before the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice and comprising of Hon’ble Justices PS Narsimha and JB Pardiwala, the Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against the Brij Bhushan on June 15 charging him with several offences including sexual harassment, molestation and stalking.
Way ahead
The Court will hold a hearing on regular bail of the former WFI Chief and assistant secretary on July 20, the next date of hearing. The interim bail has been granted to them till the next date of hearing.
