Openai’s Report Triggers Ethical Al Concerns: 1.2 Million Users Seek Self-Harm Related Advice from Chatgpt

On October 27, 2025, OpenAI published a report on its platform stating that approximately 0.15% of the ChatGPT users exhibit suicidal thoughts or psychosis and seek advice on way and methods of self-harm. While this percentage figure may make it seem insignificant, ChatGPT currently has approximately 700-800 million active users. Considering this, the number of users exhibiting self-harm tendencies is as high as 1.2 million. The conversation around AI ethics and safety of the users, especially teenagers, was sparked after the parents of a 16 year old California based teenager sued ChatGPT for their son’s wrongful death. The parents allege that despite acknowledging Adam’s suicidal tendencies and that he would ‘do it one of these days’, the AI Chabot neither terminated the session nor initiated any emergency protocol.

2025 It Rules Amendment: Regulating Synthetically Generated Information in India’s Al and Privacy Landscape

The Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology (MeitY) has proposed amendment to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules) marking a significant new phase in the regulation of online content. The 2025 Amendment focuses on mandatory disclosure and labelling of Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated synthetic content or modified content by all social media user who post such material and that at least 10% of the visual display area, or the initial 10% of an audio clip’s duration, will have to be devoted to such disclaimers. This initiative seeks to enhance transparency, accountability and user awareness in the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.
