Bureau of Indian Standards (‘BIS’) is a regulatory body operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. The purpose of establishing this regulatory body was for the development of activities pertaining to standardisation, marking and quality certification of goods. BIS is involved in various activities including but not limited to standards formulation, certification of products, hallmarking, testing and more.
The objective of BIS is to ensure that goods consumed by the consumers are safe, reliable and of a prescribed standard which will assist in reducing the health hazards on the consumers consuming such goods, control over proliferation of varieties etc. This is achieved post proper testing and inspection as per prescribed BIS standards which have been formulated for each product. The licence is granted for the products which conform to the prescribed standards.
The electronic and IT goods listed in the Schedule of Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012 are covered under the ‘Compulsory Registration Scheme’ for self-declaration of conformity. The list of goods is updated from time to time. The list of electronics and IT goods which require mandatory certification under BIS are mentioned in the table below:

Most of the conventional electronic and IT goods which are widely used in offices, households etc. have been included under the list of goods which require compulsory certification. It is essential to highlight that BIS certification is required in both cases where the electronic and IT goods mentioned in the table above are manufactured in India as well as when imported from outside India.
