The Ministry of Civil Aviation vide its notification dated February 21, 2020 has amended the Aircraft Rules, 1937. The Amended Rules provide that Pilot-in-Command may permit internet access by passengers on board on aircraft in flight.
Wi Fi on Aircraft made Accessible
The amended Rules also known as the Aircraft (Second Amendment) Rules, 2020 incorporates Rule 29B (3). Rule 29B(3) states that passengers can access internet services through Wi-Fi on board, when laptop, smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, e-reader or a point of sale device is used in flight or airplane mode.
The proviso to the said Rule states that for usage of internet service in flight through Wi-Fi on board, the Director-General shall certify the aircraft subject to the specified procedures.

The Amended Rules have come into force on the date of publication in the official gazette.
The aforesaid development is a good news for the passengers on board on aircraft because access to internet services has almost become an indispensable part of day-to-day lives of everyone.
