IAM has ranked S.S. Rana & Co. in the Bronze tier for Firms: litigation in India in the IAM Patent 1000 2026. The firm moves up from a recommendation for patent litigation in 2025, and in the same edition rises to the Gold tier for patent prosecution.

About the IAM Patent 1000

IAM is a specialist publication on IP as a business asset. Its Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals identifies leading private practice patent firms and individuals across dozens of jurisdictions, and the 2026 edition is its fifteenth.

Who qualifies. IAM assesses private practice firms and practitioners on their patent work and market reputation, drawing on the views of peers and clients with direct knowledge of their practice.

How firms are chosen. The 2026 rankings follow a five-month research process with thousands of interviews with private practice lawyers, patent attorneys and in-house counsel. IAM’s research team analyses those interviews alongside written submissions and client feedback.

The format. Firms are placed in tiers, including gold, silver and bronze. In jurisdictions where the market divides by specialism, such as India, IAM publishes separate firm rankings for prosecution and litigation, so a firm can be ranked in each on its own merits.

What the ranking recognises

A move up in patent litigation. The Bronze tier places S.S. Rana & Co. among the firms IAM ranks for contested patent work in India in 2026, following its recommendation for patent litigation in the 2025 edition.

Strength across the patent lifecycle. In the same edition, IAM notes that the firm has climbed the patent prosecution rankings to the Gold tier. Ranking in both categories reflects a practice that runs from drafting and examination through to enforcement in court.

The firm’s standing. IAM highlights the firm’s legacy of more than 35 years, the trust it has earned from technical universities, design institutes, government bodies and private institutions, and the multidisciplinary background of its IP team.

Leadership. IAM describes Managing Partner Vikrant Rana as a commanding presence in India’s IP field and a trusted adviser to multinationals and start-ups, supported by Associate Partners Renu Bala Rampal and Johny Solomon Raj, who leads the firm’s Chennai branch.

Patent litigation in India

Patent disputes in India are governed by the Patents Act, 1970. Under Section 104, an infringement suit must be filed in a court not lower than a District Court, and it moves to the High Court if the defendant counterclaims for revocation. A patent can also be challenged through a revocation petition under Section 64.

Since the Intellectual Property Appellate Board was abolished under the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021, revocation petitions and appeals from the Controller are heard by the High Courts. The High Court of Delhi set up a dedicated IP Division in 2021 and the High Court of Madras followed in 2023, and high-value patent suits are handled under the Commercial Courts Act, 2015. For Indian companies and multinational corporations alike, these changes have made the choice of forum and the timing of a revocation challenge central to litigation strategy.

Patent litigation at S.S. Rana & Co.

From prosecution to court. The firm’s litigation work follows on from its prosecution practice, so the team that understands how a patent was drafted and examined can carry it into contested proceedings.

Enforcement. It acts in patent infringement suits before High Courts and district courts, including applications for urgent interim injunctions, along with criminal enforcement and customs action.

Validity challenges. It handles pre-grant and post-grant oppositions, revocation and rectification proceedings, and appeals.

Technical depth. Its patent attorneys and agents work across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, electronics, software and artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering and clean technology.

Writing on patent disputes. The firm writes regularly on developments in Indian patent litigation, including the Madras High Court’s approach to choosing between an independent revocation petition and a counterclaim under Sections 64 and 104.
