About IAM Global Leaders

The format. Global Leaders is a series of interviews, not a ranking table. Each featured practitioner answers questions on their practice and on current issues in the patent world, and IAM publishes a list of all featured individuals by jurisdiction.
What the 2027 interview covers
The real value of IP. Asked what advising clients from Fortune 500 companies to first-time innovators has taught him, Vikrant says the value of IP is set by the significance of the ideas behind it rather than the size of the business that owns it.
IP for large companies. For Fortune 500 companies, he describes IP as a strategic asset that supports market leadership, investment, expansion and competitiveness.
IP for grassroots innovators. For first-time and grassroots entrepreneurs, he explains, IP can be transformative, giving them credibility, protection and routes to investment, licensing and commercialisation. He sums up IP as a means of giving ideas recognition so that innovation can thrive.
Practice, writing and teaching. He describes writing as a way to explore emerging issues where IP, technology and innovation meet, and sees academia and practice as complementary: client work informs his scholarship, while research and teaching sharpen his analysis.

From 2026 to 2027
Vikrant was first featured in IAM Global Leaders 2026, when he was one of two practitioners from India. His return in 2027 follows a strong year for the firm in IAM’s research: in the IAM Patent 1000 2026, S.S. Rana & Co. climbed to the Gold tier for patent prosecution and was ranked Bronze for patent litigation, and Vikrant was listed in the IAM Strategy 300.
About Vikrant Rana
Vikrant Rana is the Managing Partner of S.S. Rana & Co., a full-service IP and corporate law firm founded in 1989 and headquartered in New Delhi, with branch offices in Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata. IAM describes him as a multi-speciality lawyer, an Advocate on Record at the Supreme Court of India and a registered patent agent, with more than 30 years of experience.
Practice. He is a trusted adviser to thousands of clients, from Fortune 500 companies and multinational corporations to grassroots innovators and start-ups, on contentious and non-contentious matters. His work spans patent prosecution, examination strategy, opposition, post-grant proceedings, enforcement and multi-jurisdictional litigation.
Start-ups and innovators. Since 2016 he has been an IP facilitator under the Government of India’s Start-ups Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP) scheme, guiding more than 350 start-ups and grassroots innovators through filing, prosecution and enforcement.
Academia. He holds appointments as Professor of Practice at several Indian universities and speaks regularly at national and international IP conferences, industry forums and government seminars.
