Vikrant Rana: asialaw: 2024 Lawyer Ratings: Distinguished Practitioner

Vikrant Rana, Managing Partner of S.S. Rana & Co., has been recognised as a Distinguished Practitioner in the asialaw 2024 Lawyer Ratings, the Asia-Pacific guide to leading law firms and lawyers.

About asialaw

asialaw is a research-based guide to law firms and lawyers across Asia-Pacific, published by Legal Benchmarking Group, which also publishes Managing IP’s IP STARS and IFLR1000.

Who qualifies: Private practice lawyers in each Asia-Pacific jurisdiction are assessed in their practice areas.

How lawyers are rated: asialaw’s ratings draw on submissions from firms, feedback from clients and peers, and its own editorial research.

The format: Individual lawyers are rated in tiers, including Elite, Distinguished and Notable practitioners. A Distinguished Practitioner is recognised as a leader in their field and jurisdiction.

What the recognition reflects

A full IP practice: Vikrant’s work covers trademarks, patents, copyright, designs and geographical indications, on contentious and non-contentious matters.

Clients of every size: He advises Fortune 500 and multinational companies as well as grassroots innovators, and helps start-ups protect their IP as a facilitator under the Government of India’s SIPP scheme.

From filing to court: His practice runs from clearance and prosecution to enforcement and litigation before courts across India.

Geographical indications in India

Geographical indications protect products whose quality or reputation comes from where they are made, and India has one of the world’s richest GI registers.

What a GI protects: A GI identifies goods as originating in a particular region, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic is essentially due to that origin. Agricultural products, foodstuffs, handicrafts and manufactured goods can all qualify. Darjeeling tea was the first product registered as a GI in India.

Who applies and who can use it: An application is filed by an association of producers or an organisation representing their interests. Producers in the defined area can then register as authorised users.

How long protection lasts: Under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, registration lasts 10 years and can be renewed for further periods of 10 years.

Enforcement: Use of a registered GI by unauthorised persons, or use that misleads consumers about the origin of goods, can be restrained through infringement proceedings.

See the firm’s list of registered GIs in India and its GI FAQs.
