S.S. Rana & Co. was recognised as a Leading IPR & Corporate Law Firm at the 16th Global IP Convention (GIPC), held at the Radisson Blu Hotel Şişli, Istanbul, on 6 and 7 June 2024. The firm also powered the convention, the first GIPC held outside India.
About the Global IP Convention
The Global IP Convention is an annual conference for in-house IP counsel, innovators and IP lawyers from around the world. It began in Kolkata in 2009 with about 150 participants, and has since worked with Indian bodies such as FICCI, CII and CIPAM and with international IP offices.
A first international edition: The 16th edition took GIPC outside India for the first time, under the theme “Learn, Connect, Collaborate”, bringing together more than 100 delegates from companies and firms across several countries.
Official participation: The President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT), Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, took part in the convention.
Recognition at the convention: Alongside the sessions, GIPC recognises firms and individuals for their contribution to the IP field.
What the recognition reflects
IP and corporate together: The recognition as a Leading IPR & Corporate Law Firm reflects the firm’s combination of a full IP practice with corporate and commercial work.
A global outlook: The firm acts for Indian and international clients, coordinates international trademark and patent filings, and serves as a single point of contact for IP across the SAARC region.
Bridging markets: Powering GIPC’s first international edition reflects the firm’s role in connecting Indian businesses with IP professionals and opportunities abroad, and foreign businesses with the Indian market.
Protecting IP in Türkiye from India
Türkiye sits between Europe and Asia and is a significant market for many Indian businesses. Its IP law is set out mainly in the Industrial Property Law No. 6769 of 2017, administered by TÜRKPATENT.
Trademarks: Türkiye is a member of the Madrid Protocol, so an Indian applicant can designate it in an international application filed through the Indian Trade Marks Registry, or file nationally.
Patents: Türkiye is a member of both the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the European Patent Convention, giving three routes: PCT national phase entry, validation of a European patent, or a direct national filing.
Enforcement: As in India, effective protection depends on local counsel and on monitoring the market, which is why the firm’s international brand protection work relies on a network of trusted associates.
