S.S. Rana & Co.: ASSOCHAM: Best Employer for Women 2024: First Runner-Up (Small Category)

S.S. Rana & Co. has been named First Runner-Up for Best Employer for Women in the Small Category at the ASSOCHAM Diversity & Inclusion Excellence Awards in 2024. It is the second time ASSOCHAM has recognised the firm as a best employer for women, after its award in 2019-20.

About the ASSOCHAM Diversity & Inclusion Excellence Awards

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) is one of India’s oldest and largest industry associations. Its Diversity & Inclusion Excellence Awards and Conclave bring together employers, policymakers and advocates to recognise workplaces that put inclusion into practice.

The categories: Awards are given in categories including Best Employer for Women, Best Employer for Persons with Disabilities, Best Employer for Policies on Diversity & Inclusion, and D&I Champion.

By size: Employers are recognised separately in small, medium and large categories, so each organisation is compared with others of a similar size.

Winners and runners-up: In each category, ASSOCHAM names a winner and runners-up from the nominations it receives across sectors.

What the award recognises

The award reflects practices that S.S. Rana & Co.’s own people describe:

Equality from the start: The firm adopted gender equality and fair work practices early, and women hold senior leadership roles, including Managing Partner Lucy Rana.

Safety beyond the office: Women leaving after dark are escorted by colleagues, and a buddy system supports their safety on the way home.

Time for life outside work: Birthday leave and family celebration leave sit alongside earned, medical and casual leave.

A safe workplace: The firm advises clients on POSH compliance, and applies the same standards to its own workplace.

Equal pay and safe working hours: the legal baseline

Equal pay: The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 requires employers to pay men and women equally for the same work or work of a similar nature, and prohibits discrimination against women in recruitment, promotions and conditions of service.

Night work: Factory and shops and establishments laws traditionally restricted women working at night. Most states now allow it, usually with the woman’s consent and safeguards such as safe transport, adequate security and protection against harassment.

Beyond compliance: Escort and buddy systems, flexible leave and visible women leaders go further than the law requires, and are what recognitions like ASSOCHAM’s are designed to reward. The firm’s labour law team advises employers on building these policies.
