IBLJ Law Firm Awards 2026: IP Enforcement

India Business Law Journal (IBLJ) has named S.S. Rana & Co. an award-winning law firm for Intellectual Property Enforcement in the IBLJ Law Firm Awards 2026, published on 29 June 2026. The firm also won the Pro Bono award in the same edition, and IBLJ’s write-up singles out its work for spice maker Everest Food Products in a trademark dispute.

About the IBLJ Law Firm Awards

India Business Law Journal is a publication covering business law in India, available online through Law.asia. Its Law Firm Awards have been presented every year since 2009 and recognise Indian law firms across practice areas and industry sectors.

Who qualifies. All Indian law firms are automatically eligible. IBLJ states that there are no entry fees or other obligations, and no awards dinner that winners have to pay to attend.

How winners are chosen. IBLJ judges the awards on nominations from in-house counsel and other qualified observers in India and abroad, submissions from candidate firms, reference checks with law firm clients and background research by its editorial team. Lawyers at Indian law firms cannot nominate, although their firms can make submissions.

The format. The awards are not a ranking. IBLJ names a group of winners in each category, with seven winners in most categories in 2026, and splits some categories into separate sections for firms with up to 100 lawyers and firms with more than 100.

What the award recognises

In its 2026 analysis, IBLJ points to the following aspects of the firm’s practice:

Breadth of enforcement work. IBLJ describes S.S. Rana & Co. as a Delhi-based firm active across several areas of IP enforcement, supported by a protection practice that runs from IP assessment, searching and clearance through drafting, filing, prosecution, international registration, licensing and portfolio maintenance.

Three decades of IP practice. IBLJ notes that the firm has practised IP for more than thirty years and is one of the few firms acting as a single point of contact for the countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC).

The Everest TIKHALAL matter. IBLJ highlights the firm’s representation of spice manufacturer Everest Food Products in a trademark infringement and passing off action against Shyam Dhani Industries. Everest had registered TIKHALAL for chilli powder in 2002, and challenged the defendants’ use of SHYAM TIKHA LAL. In an order uploaded in January 2025, the Bombay High Court granted an interim injunction restraining the defendants and imposed costs of Rs 2 lakh after finding that a sales invoice relied on to show prior use had been fabricated (Everest Food Products Pvt. Ltd. v. Shyam Dhani Industries Pvt. Ltd. & Ors., Commercial IPR Suit No. 178 of 2021, 2025:BHC-OS:17).

IP enforcement in India

IP enforcement in India rests on the Trade Marks Act, 1999, the Copyright Act, 1957, the Patents Act, 1970, the Designs Act, 2000 and the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, with high-value disputes heard by commercial courts under the Commercial Courts Act, 2015. The High Courts of Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta hear IP suits on their original side, and the High Court of Delhi has had a dedicated IP Division since 2021.

For Indian brand owners and multinational companies operating in India, enforcement usually combines civil suits for infringement and passing off, interim and dynamic injunctions, criminal complaints against counterfeiters, customs recordals at the border and takedown action against online marketplaces.
