About Leaders League

Leaders League is an international rating agency and business information group founded in Paris in 1996. It researches and publishes rankings of law firms and other professional service providers across several regions, and its rankings are free to consult on its website.

Its India IP coverage. For India, Leaders League publishes separate intellectual property rankings, including one for patent prosecution and one for brands, each built through its own research cycle.

How the 2026 patent prosecution ranking is built

Tiers. The 2026 India table groups firms into Leading (itself split into two bands), Excellent and Highly Recommended. Leaders League notes that firms and individuals within each tier are listed alphabetically, so the order inside a tier carries no ranking weight.

Research cycle. Each ranking cycle takes about four months: roughly three months to gather information and a further month to analyse it and settle the tiers.

Sources. Leaders League relies on four inputs: submissions and editorial interviews with firms; feedback from clients, whom it contacts in its own name rather than on behalf of any firm; peer feedback, which it says it does not take at face value given its built-in bias; and views from qualified third parties who are neither clients nor competitors of the firm being assessed.

Criteria. Firms are assessed on the nature, complexity, volume and quality of their matters, their standing among clients, peers and third parties, the size and senior track record of the team, and the profile and international spread of their client base.

Patent prosecution in India: what the ranking covers

Patent prosecution is the stage between filing a patent application and its grant. In India it is governed by the Patents Act, 1970 and the Patents Rules, 2003, and it takes place before the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, which operates patent offices in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

In practice, the work spans drafting and filing complete specifications, PCT national phase entry, the request for examination, the reply to the First Examination Report, hearings before the Controller, and pre-grant and post-grant oppositions. For Indian companies, start-ups and multinational corporations protecting inventions in India, the quality of this work largely decides the scope of the patent that is finally granted and how well it holds up if challenged later.
