Lucy Rana, Managing Partner of S.S. Rana & Co., has received the Star Women IP Lawyer of the Year Award at the 9th Annual Global IP, AI & Tech Conclave & Awards 2025, organised by Legal Era Global at the Taj Dubai on 20 and 21 January 2025. At the same event, Managing Partner Vikrant Rana received the IP Leader of the Year Award.
About the Global IP, AI & Tech Conclave
Legal Era is a legal media group that has run publications and knowledge-sharing conferences for the legal community since 2009, across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and Africa. Its Global IP, AI & Tech Conclave & Awards is organised with the Legal Era IP Lawyers Community and the Global IP AI & Tech Community (GIPAIT).
Who it brings together: The 2025 conclave brought together IP and technology lawyers, in-house IP counsel and academics, with speakers from 13 countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
What it covers: Under the theme “Artificial Intelligence Changing the World of IP & Tech”, its 4 plenary sessions and more than 18 sessions covered IP strategy in the age of AI, generative AI and ownership of IP, pharmaceutical patents, IP for start-ups and SMEs, trade secrets, FRAND and standard-essential patents, AI and copyright in media, and enforcement in Asia and the MENA region.
The awards: The Legal Era Global IP Awards honour IP counsel, women in IP and IP lawyers from around the world for their contributions to patents, trademarks, copyright and trade secrets.
What the award recognises
The Star Women IP Lawyer of the Year Award recognises women whose work has shaped IP practice. For Lucy, it reflects:
Leadership in trademark practice: Lucy leads S.S. Rana & Co.’s trademark, IP enforcement, IP watch and domain name dispute resolution teams, advising Fortune 500 companies and leading Indian and international businesses.
A business-minded approach: With training in both law and business management, she brings a commercial view to branding strategy, IP audits, portfolio management and anti-counterfeiting work.
Building IP awareness: She founded IP4Kids, the firm’s initiative to spread IP awareness and encourage innovation among young people.
AI and IP in India
The conclave’s theme reflects questions Indian law is still working through. The Copyright Act, 1957 is built around a human author, which leaves the status of purely AI-generated works uncertain. Section 3(k) of the Patents Act, 1970 excludes computer programs per se from patentability, so AI-related inventions must show a technical contribution beyond the software itself.
At the same time, Indian courts have moved to protect people from AI misuse. In Anil Kapoor v. Simply Life India and Others (2023), the Delhi High Court restrained the use of AI tools to imitate the actor’s face, voice and persona, recognising personality rights against deepfakes. For brand owners, the same concerns extend to AI-generated counterfeits, fake endorsements and impersonation online.
