Lucy Rana: A-List, India’s Most Recommended Lawyers, IBLJ 2024-2025

India Business Law Journal (IBLJ) has named Lucy Rana, Managing Partner of S.S. Rana & Co., in The A-List 2024-25, its list of India’s most recommended lawyers. She is listed for corporate and commercial law and intellectual property, and returns to the A-List after her inclusion in the 2023-24 edition.

About the IBLJ A-List

India Business Law Journal is a publication covering business law in India, available online through Law.asia. Its A-List identifies India’s most recommended private practice lawyers and legal icons.

Who qualifies: All private practice lawyers currently working at Indian law firms are automatically eligible. Independent advocates and senior counsel are not included, and there are no fees or other requirements for entry.

How lawyers are chosen: The A-List is based on the collective views of in-house counsel and India-focused partners at international law firms. Respondents nominate lawyers and give a justification for each, and IBLJ’s editorial team adds its own background research.

The format: Lawyers are listed as A-List Lawyers or A-List Icons, with their practice areas. IBLJ notes that the list reflects the nominations and testimonials it received and is not a comprehensive ranking of every leading lawyer in India.

What the recognition reflects

In its 2024-25 profile, IBLJ highlights:

Law and business together: Lucy read law at the University of Delhi, specialising in IP, and enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2007. IBLJ notes that more than 25 years across legal practice and the corporate world give her a deep understanding of the micro and macro factors that shape businesses.

Advice for leading companies: She advises many Fortune 500, national and international companies on a range of IP and corporate matters.

Due diligence and team leadership: She regularly conducts due diligence with a focus on IP issues, and leads the firm’s trademarks, IP enforcement, IP watch and domain name dispute resolution teams.

IP awareness: IBLJ credits her as a visionary in establishing IP4Kids, the firm’s initiative to spread IP awareness and encourage creativity and innovation among young people.

Recording IP assignments in India

Where corporate transactions and IP meet, one practical point often decides whether a buyer really owns what it paid for: whether the transfer of each IP right has been properly documented and recorded.

Patents: Under Sections 68 and 69 of the Patents Act, 1970, a patent assignment must be in writing and registered with the Patent Office. An unregistered assignment is generally not admitted as evidence of title.

Trademarks: Under Section 45 of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, the new owner of a registered trademark should apply to the Registrar to record the assignment, so that the register reflects who can license and enforce the mark.

Copyright: Under Sections 18 and 19 of the Copyright Act, 1957, an assignment must be in writing and signed, and should identify the rights, their duration and territory. If it does not, the law presumes a term of five years and the territory of India.

Checking these steps is a core part of IP due diligence, and well-drafted transaction documents make recordal an obligation rather than an afterthought.
