Design registration in Angola

  1. Filing of the request before the PTO (Instituto Angolano de Propriedade Industrial),
  2. Issuance of the official form and receipt with the industrial design number (usually, within 4 weeks from the filing date),
  3. Publication of the application in the IP Bulletin,
  4. 60 days period for the filing of oppositions by third parties who considered themselves to be adversely affected by the registration of the design application (extendable for 30 days),
  5. Payment of the examination fee,
  6. Examination by the Angolan PTO.
  7. Granting publication in the IP Bulletin and issuance of the registration certificate

Required Documents:

  1. Power of Attorney, notarized and legalized at an Angolan Consulate (original document required) – attached is our sample;
  2. Deed of Assignment signed by the designer in the circumstance the designer is not the Applicant, notarized and legalized at an Angolan Consulate (original document required) – attached is our sample;
  3. Priority document (just in case the priority is claimed), which is required to be legalized at an Angolan Consulate (original document required);
  4. Short description of de design;
  5. Drawings of the design (multiple perspectives).

Time Frame:

Usually, a design application takes between 3 – 4 years to be registered in Angola.

Multiple Designs:

It is not possible. In Angola, each design shall correspond to an independent application.

Design registration term in Angola

The 5 years validity term of the industrial design starts from the filing date and may be renewed twice for the same period.

To maintain the industrial design valid in this jurisdiction, it shall be necessary to pay an annual fee. The 1st and 2nd annuities are paid upon the filing of the industrial design.
