Design Registration in Zanzibar
- Application for design registration is initiated by submitting the duly filled prescribed form along with the relevant documents to the Registrar.
- Upon receiving the design application, the Registrar shall examine the application, as to form and substance.
- Where the application complies with all mandatory requirements, the Registrar shall publish in the Journal a notice that she is ready to register the design.
- If no opposition is filed then the applicant is required within 90 days from the publication date, to remit the prescribed registration fee to cover the costs of issuance of certificate of registration, as well as cost for design protection for five years.
- After 90 days and upon receiving the aforesaid cost, the Registrar shall proceed to issue a certificate of registration.
Required Documents:
Applicant shall submit physically the following documents to the Registrar of the Industrial Property:
- Power of attorney;
- Four Drawings/photographs or four graphic representations of design;
- Description /statement of novelty
- Priority document (v)
- Details of International classification (vi)
application shall indicate applicant’s name, address, nationality, residence and telephone number.
Additionally, the application shall be subject to the payment of the prescribed application fee.
Time Frame:
The expected timeframe for a design to be registered is 8 to 12 months from the filing date.
Multiple Designs:
It is possible. Two or more designs may be subject to the same application, but only if they relate to the same class of international classification or to the same set or composition of articles.
