Design Law in Bahrain

Process of design registration:

1. The convention priority to be claimed in Bahrain is 6 months.
2. Any number of views of the same design filled in the same application is Maximum 50 views in one application and must be one unit.
3. The approximate time for examination is from 2-3 month and for acceptance is from 2-3 month.
4. Please be advised that annuity fees for Designs in Bahrain are due on the second year following the date of Granted and due on the exact day.
5. In the event that the annuity fees are not paid before the due date, a six-month grace period will be allowed for payment without penalty.
6. If the annuity fees are still not paid by the deadline indicated in sentence above, it would still be possible to pay the fees within the next six months with penalty.
7. The design rights will lapse if the annuity fees are not paid after expiry of more than ONE year as from the due date and it’s not possible to restore the lapsed designs.
8. The time frame to get the certificate of grant is 5-6 months.

Required Documents:

1. Power of attorney legalised or apostille.
2. A copy for each section of the design from different angles covering all aspects.
3. Extract of the commercial register if the applicant is a local company.
4. Business license if the applicant is a foreign company.
5. Deed of assignment document if the applicant is not the inventor.

Please note that ONE legalized Power of Attorney and ONE legalized Extract from the Commercial Register or

Articles of Incorporation will be sufficient for filing any number of design applications for the same client in Bahrain

Time Frame:

1. The time required from filing the design application until the grant is 24 months.
2. The protection period of a design is ten (10) years from the filing date, renewable only once for a period of five (5) years, making the design protected for a total of fifteen (15) years.

Multiple Designs:

In Bahrain, a single application can be filed for multiple designs. The number of such designs must not exceed 50 designs and they must belong to the same class.
